Alber Elbaz has been dismissed from Lanvin SA's board of directors. His removal from the board was decided at a brief board meeting on Monday, April 24, and follows his removal from his position as artistic director last February. Elbaz's removal seemed to be just another matter of business as the designer was removed from his post last October.
Bouchra Jarrar has been chosen to succeed Elbaz, and she will be debuting her first women's collection for the spring/summer 2017 season.
The removal of Elbaz will have no effect on his minority shareholding in the company, but it does mark the end to the designer's last position where he got to wield any actual influence over the company he helped propel back to fame. Neither Lanvin nor Elbaz would comment on this issue.
Elbaz may have found success with his runway shows and ready-to-wear designs, but the company was still stagnant in the leather goods and accessories goods category behind larger and better funded rivals. Jarrar is described as a minimalist although she is a couturier, so it will be interesting to see what she does for the brand.
Lanvin's consolidated sales have declined over the past few years, where just a few years ago they peaked at around 250 million euros they have declined to just around 200 million euros. Jarrar is expected to revive the declining brand.
